People had say in new Cabinet
Fiji’s new-look interim Cabinet line-up is based on recommendations of the people and not the military council alone, says interim Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama.
Bainimarama announced his streamlined 12-member Cabinet this afternoon, indicating the incorporation of five portfolios into existing ministries.
He did admit the delay was a result of consciousness of those approached over travel bans imposed against those who join his regime.
“I acted on people’s recommendations. There are a lot of people besides the military council that have come up with recommendations,” Bainimarama said.
He added the new appointments had no political influence.
“You cannot put political considerations before your country and your people,” he said.
“I critically assessed the progress of my government, despite its achievements, which have been many. I was not satisfied with the overall level of accomplishment relative to the mandate given by his Excellency our President (Ratu Josefa Iloilo).
“This is so because I believe we should be moving faster and with greater consistency – with a sense of urgency to achieve more concrete results in the delivery of service to the people of Fiji.”
Bainimarama said the overall goal of the reshuffle was to remove overlaps and conflicts, balance the workloads and responsibilities and enhance synergies.
Further objectives, he said were to improve the overall functioning and effectiveness of the government machinery as a whole.
Bainimarama said his new Cabinet would focus on delivering basic services to the people.
“It will focus on roads and transport. It will put emphasis on the delivery of water and electricity. It will focus on creating an efficient and conducive environment for robust investment – investment that will provide benefits not just for investors but for Fiji and for the people,” he said.
